About Arwah Cave
Arwah Cave (also spelled Arwah or Arwa) is one of the most scientifically significant caves in Meghalaya. Located near Cherrapunji, this ancient limestone cave contains marine fossils estimated to be over 100 million years old — evidence that this entire region was once submerged under a prehistoric ocean. The fossils of shells, corals, and marine organisms are clearly visible embedded in the cave walls.
The cave stretches for approximately 4.7 km, though only about 1 km is open to tourists. The interior features impressive stalactites and stalagmites formed over millions of years, narrow passages, and large chambers. The cave is well-lit and has a concrete walkway, making it accessible even for those not experienced with caving.
Unlike the more popular Mawsmai Cave which is shorter and more crowded, Arwah Cave offers a longer, more immersive experience with a mandatory local guide who explains the geological history and points out the fossils. It's a must-visit for anyone interested in natural history, geology, or simply experiencing something truly unique in Meghalaya.

Tips for Visiting Arwah Cave
Wear closed-toe shoes — the cave floor can be slippery and uneven in places.
Carry a light jacket — the cave temperature is around 18–20°C year-round, much cooler than outside.
Visit on weekdays to avoid school groups and weekend crowds.
Photography is allowed but flash photography may be restricted in some sections.
The cave is not suitable for people with severe claustrophobia — some passages are narrow.
Combine with Mawsmai Cave on the same day — they are only 3 km apart.
Bah Markos Says
"Arwah Cave is my personal favourite in Cherrapunji. The fossils are 100 million years old — you're literally touching ancient ocean floor. The guide inside is very knowledgeable and will show you things you'd completely miss on your own. I always do Arwah Cave before Mawsmai Cave because Arwah is longer and more interesting. After the caves, we go to Nohkalikai Falls for sunset — perfect day."
