About Bishop Falls

Bishop Falls is a wide, multi-tiered waterfall located near Cherrapunji (Sohra) in the East Khasi Hills of Meghalaya. Named after a British bishop who reportedly visited the area during colonial times, the falls cascade over a broad rocky face into a deep gorge below. During peak monsoon, the sheer volume of water is breathtaking — the falls spread across nearly 30 metres of cliff face.

Unlike the more famous Nohkalikai Falls which is a single dramatic plunge, Bishop Falls has a more layered, cascading character. The surrounding area is covered in dense subtropical forest, and the viewpoint offers a panoramic view of the falls against the backdrop of the Cherrapunji plateau. It's a perfect stop on any Cherrapunji day tour.

Getting There

Bishop Falls is located about 90 km from Shillong, roughly 2.5–3 hours by road. It's situated near the Cherrapunji–Mawsynram highway, making it easy to combine with other Cherrapunji attractions. The viewpoint is accessible by road with a short walk.

Bah Markos Says

"Bishop Falls is one of those places where you stop for 5 minutes and end up staying for 30. The width of the falls is what gets people — it's not as tall as Nohkalikai but it's much wider and feels more powerful up close. I always stop here on the way back from Nohkalikai when the light is better. Bring a light jacket — the mist makes it cold even in summer."
