Local Insider Guide

Why Cherrapunji is a Must-Do from Shillong

Cherrapunji — locally called Sohra — holds the record for the highest rainfall ever recorded on Earth. But don't let that scare you. From October to April, the skies clear up and reveal a landscape so dramatic it looks like it was painted.

I've been taking guests to Cherrapunji for over a decade. Every single time, people are speechless at Nohkalikai Falls — India's tallest plunge waterfall at 340 metres. The turquoise pool at the bottom, the mist rising up, the sheer scale of it... there's nothing like it.

The Double Decker Root Bridge is another story. You trek down 3,500 steps through a living jungle, and at the bottom you find a bridge made entirely of living tree roots — grown over 500 years by the Khasi people. It's not just a sight, it's a feeling.

My recommendation: Do Cherrapunji as a full day trip from Shillong. Start early (6 AM), cover 5–6 spots, and return by evening. I'll handle the driving, the route, and the local knowledge.

Markos's Insider Tips for Cherrapunji

Start by 6 AM from Shillong. Cherrapunji gets crowded by 10 AM, especially at Nohkalikai.

Avoid monsoon (Jun–Aug) if you want clear views. The falls are full but visibility is poor.

Wear proper trekking shoes for the Root Bridge. The 3,500 steps are steep and slippery.

Try Jadoh (rice + pork) at a local dhaba in Sohra. Much better than tourist restaurants.

Best photography light at Nohkalikai is 9–11 AM. Afternoon gets hazy.

Carry a torch for Mawsmai Cave. The provided lights are dim in some sections.
