Introduction
The Umngot River at Dawki is one of those places that makes you question whether you're looking at a photograph. The water is so transparent that boats appear to be floating on glass — you can see every pebble, every fish, every shadow on the riverbed 10–15 feet below.
Dawki sits at the India-Bangladesh border in the Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya. The river itself forms the natural boundary between the two countries. On the Indian side, lush green hills rise dramatically. On the Bangladeshi side, the flat plains stretch to the horizon.
I've been bringing guests here for years, and the reaction is always the same — complete silence, followed by "Is this real?" Yes, it's real. And it's one of the most unique river experiences in all of India.

Markos's Insider Tips
Arrive at Dawki by 9–10 AM. The light is perfect for photography and the boatmen are less busy. By noon it gets crowded.
Always book a private boat. Shared boats rush you. With a private boat, you can stop mid-river, take photos, and just float in silence.
Combine with Mawlynnong (15 km away). Visit Mawlynnong first (morning), then Dawki for afternoon boating. Perfect combo.
For the "floating boat" photo, shoot from the suspension bridge above the river. That's the classic Dawki shot.
You can walk to the India-Bangladesh border gate. BSF personnel are friendly and will let you take photos at the gate.
