The Cultural Heart of Northeast India
Don Bosco Museum — officially the Don Bosco Centre for Indigenous Cultures — is one of the most impressive museums in all of India. Spread across 7 floors and connected by a spectacular glass skybridge, it houses over 16,000 artifacts representing the cultures of all 7 states of Northeast India.
Built by the Salesians of Don Bosco and opened in 2010, the museum is a labor of love — decades of fieldwork, collection, and curation by missionaries who lived among the tribes of the Northeast. The result is the most comprehensive documentation of indigenous Northeast Indian culture anywhere in the world.
Plan at least 2–3 hours here. Most visitors are surprised by how much there is to see and how engaging the exhibits are — this isn't a dusty old museum, it's a living, breathing celebration of human diversity.

Bah Markos' Insider Tips
Local knowledge for a better museum experience
- Go on a weekday morning — school groups visit on weekday afternoons and weekends get crowded.
- Start from the top floor (Skybridge) and work your way down — the view is best in the morning light.
- The Khasi floor (1st floor) is the most detailed and relevant if you're visiting Meghalaya specifically.
- The museum café on the ground floor serves decent coffee and local snacks — good for a mid-tour break.
- Budget 2.5–3 hours minimum. Most people rush through and miss the best exhibits on the upper floors.
