Introduction

The Double Decker Living Root Bridge is not just a tourist attraction — it's a living testament to the ingenuity of the Khasi people. For over 500 years, the War Khasi tribe has been training the roots of the Ficus elastica (rubber tree) to grow across rivers, creating natural bridges that strengthen with age.

The Double Decker bridge at Nongriat village is unique because it has two levels — one bridge grown on top of another. It's the only double-decker living root bridge in the world. The lower bridge is older; the upper one was grown later to handle more foot traffic.

Getting there requires a trek down 3,500 steps into a deep jungle gorge. It's not easy — but every single guest I've taken there says it's the highlight of their entire Meghalaya trip. The journey through the jungle, the sound of the river, the moment you first see the bridge — it's unforgettable.

What to Expect on the Trek

1. Tyrna Village to Nongriat (1.5 hrs down)

The trek starts at Tyrna village. You descend 3,500 stone steps through dense jungle. The path is well-marked but steep. Carry water — it gets humid.

2. Nongriat Village

A small Khasi village at the bottom. You can buy water and snacks here. The villagers are friendly and used to trekkers.

3. The Double Decker Bridge

A 10-minute walk from Nongriat. When you first see it, you'll understand why people make this trek. The bridge is alive — it grows, it breathes, it's part of the forest.

4. Rainbow Falls (optional, +1 hr)

Continue 1 more hour from the bridge to reach Rainbow Falls — a stunning waterfall that creates rainbows in the afternoon light. Worth it if you have the energy.

5. Return Trek (1.5–2 hrs up)

The climb back up is harder than the descent. Take your time, rest at the tea stalls on the way up. Most people take 2 hours to climb back.

Markos's Insider Tips

Wear proper trekking shoes with grip. The steps are wet and mossy. Sandals or flip-flops are dangerous.

Carry at least 2 litres of water per person. The jungle is humid and the climb back is exhausting.

Start the trek by 8 AM. This gives you time to reach the bridge, rest, and climb back before the afternoon heat.

Hire a local guide from Tyrna village (₹200–₹300). They know the shortcuts and can tell you the history of the bridge.

Not recommended for people with knee problems or low fitness. The 3,500 steps are steep. Be honest about your fitness level.
