Introduction
Elephant Falls is Shillong's most iconic waterfall — and for good reason. Located just 12 km from Police Bazar, it's a three-tiered cascade that drops through a lush green gorge, surrounded by tropical vegetation and moss-covered rocks.
The name comes from a large elephant-shaped rock that once stood near the falls. The 1897 earthquake destroyed the rock, but the name stuck. Today, the falls are known locally as Ka Kshaid Lai Pateng Khohsiew — "the three-step waterfall" in Khasi.
I bring almost every guest here on their first day in Shillong. It's close, it's beautiful, and it sets the tone for the rest of the trip. The sound of the water, the cool mist, the green — it immediately tells you that Meghalaya is different.
Why Visit Elephant Falls
Three distinct tiers — each with its own character and viewpoint
Only 12 km from city center — perfect half-day trip
Excellent photography at all three levels
Lush tropical vegetation year-round
Very affordable — ₹20 entry, no hidden costs
Family-friendly with paved steps and railings
Things to Do
Explore all three tiers: Most tourists only see the first tier. Take the steps down to the second and third — the third tier is the most powerful and least crowded.
Photography: The best shots are from the viewing platform at the first tier (wide angle) and from the base of the second tier (close-up of the cascade).
Local market: Small stalls outside sell local snacks, bamboo crafts, and Meghalaya honey. Worth a browse.
Combine with nearby spots: Elephant Falls pairs perfectly with Lady Hydari Park (3 km away) and Don Bosco Museum (4 km away) for a full morning.

Post-Monsoon (Oct–Nov)
★★★★☆
Best balance — strong flow, clear skies, pleasant weather. My top recommendation.

Markos's Insider Tips
Visit between 9–11 AM for the best light and fewest crowds. Avoid weekends if possible.
Don't skip the third tier. Most tourists stop at the first. The third is the most powerful and has almost no crowd.
Use a wide-angle lens or your phone's ultra-wide mode at the first tier. The gorge is wider than it looks.
The mist from the falls will wet your phone/camera. Bring a small cloth or waterproof case.
