Introduction
Laitlum Canyon — the name means "end of the hills" in Khasi — is one of Meghalaya's most dramatic landscapes. A deep gorge carved by centuries of erosion, it offers views that stretch for miles across misty valleys and rolling green hills.
Most tourists miss Laitlum entirely. It's not on the standard Shillong tour circuit, which is exactly why I love taking guests there. You arrive at sunrise, the mist is still in the valley, the light is golden, and you're often the only people there.
The canyon is also the starting point for the famous David Scott Trail — a 16 km colonial-era trekking route that ends at Mawphlang. If you're a trekker, this is a must-do.

Markos's Insider Tips
Go for sunrise. Laitlum at midday is just a viewpoint. At sunrise, it's a spiritual experience. Worth the 4:30 AM wake-up.
October to December is the best window. The air is clear, the mist is low in the valley, and the light is perfect.
Walk to the edge carefully. There are no railings at the main viewpoint. Keep children close.
Combine with Mawphlang Sacred Forest (same distance from Shillong). Do Laitlum sunrise, then Mawphlang forest walk — perfect half-day.
