Introduction
Mawlynnong is a small Khasi village in the East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya, about 90 km from Shillong. In 2003, Discover India magazine awarded it the title of "Asia's Cleanest Village" — and the village has taken that title seriously ever since.
Walking through Mawlynnong is a genuinely different experience. The paths are swept clean every morning. Bamboo dustbins line every corner. Flowers bloom in every garden. There's no litter, no plastic, no noise. It feels like a village from another era.
What makes Mawlynnong special isn't just the cleanliness — it's the community spirit behind it. Every family participates. Children are taught from birth to keep the village clean. It's a cultural value, not a government mandate.
I always combine Mawlynnong with Dawki (15 km away). Visit the village in the morning, then head to the Umngot River for afternoon boating. It's the perfect Meghalaya day trip.

Stroll through the immaculate lanes, admire the flower gardens, and observe daily Khasi village life. The whole village is walkable in 30–45 minutes.

Climb the bamboo treehouse at the edge of the village for panoramic views of the Bangladesh plains below. Entry: ₹20.
Riwai Root Bridge
A 2 km walk from Mawlynnong leads to the Riwai single-decker living root bridge — much easier to reach than the Double Decker bridge in Cherrapunji.
Local Tea & Food
Small homestays in the village serve local Khasi food — rice, pork, and bamboo shoot dishes. Simple, authentic, and delicious.

Markos's Insider Tips
Arrive by 9–10 AM. The village is most beautiful in the morning light, and you'll have it mostly to yourself before the tour buses arrive.
Don't miss the Riwai Root Bridge — it's a 2 km walk from the village and has almost no crowds compared to the Cherrapunji bridges.
Combine with Dawki (15 km away). Mawlynnong in the morning, Dawki boating in the afternoon — the perfect day trip.
Respect the village rules. Don't litter (obviously). Don't pick flowers. Don't enter private homes without invitation.
