About Mawsmai Cave
Mawsmai Cave is the most popular and accessible cave in Meghalaya, located just 6 km from Cherrapunji town. The cave is approximately 150 metres long and is fully illuminated with coloured lights, making it one of the most visitor-friendly cave experiences in Northeast India. The cave features impressive stalactites and stalagmites, narrow passages, and large chambers that open up dramatically as you walk through.
The cave was formed over millions of years by the action of slightly acidic rainwater dissolving the limestone rock. Given that Cherrapunji is one of the wettest places on Earth, the cave formations here are particularly well-developed. The cave is a through-cave — you enter from one end and exit from the other, making navigation simple and straightforward.
Mawsmai Cave is suitable for all ages and fitness levels. The path is paved and well-lit throughout. Some sections require ducking or squeezing through narrow passages, which adds to the adventure. It's a quick but memorable experience that should be on every Cherrapunji itinerary.

Bah Markos Says
"Mawsmai Cave is quick but everyone loves it. I always do Arwah Cave first because it's longer and more educational, then Mawsmai Cave after — that way you get the best of both. The key is to arrive at Mawsmai before 11 AM or after 3 PM to avoid the big tour groups. The cave is only 150 metres but the formations are beautiful. Kids especially love the narrow squeeze sections — it feels like a real adventure."
