Introduction
Nohkalikai Falls is the crown jewel of Cherrapunji — and arguably the most dramatic natural sight in all of northeast India. At 340 metres, it's India's tallest plunge waterfall, dropping straight off a cliff into a stunning turquoise pool below.
The name "Nohkalikai" translates to "Jump of Ka Likai" in Khasi — a reference to a tragic local legend about a woman named Ka Likai who jumped off the cliff in grief. The story adds a haunting depth to an already overwhelming sight.
I've taken hundreds of guests here. Every single one goes quiet when they first see it. The scale is hard to comprehend until you're standing at the viewpoint, looking down at the tiny turquoise pool 340 metres below, with mist rising up and clouds rolling in from Bangladesh.

Best Time to Visit
Monsoon (Jun–Sep)
★★★★★
Falls at absolute maximum power. The roar is deafening. Visibility can be low due to mist and clouds, but the experience is unmatched.
Post-Monsoon (Oct–Nov)
★★★★☆
Strong flow, clear skies, turquoise pool visible. Best for photography. My top recommendation for most visitors.
Winter (Dec–Feb)
★★★☆☆
Reduced flow but crystal clear views. The turquoise pool is most visible. Cold weather adds atmosphere.
Summer (Mar–May)
★★☆☆☆
Minimal flow. The falls are a trickle. Not recommended unless you're combining with other Cherrapunji spots.

Markos's Insider Tips
Arrive by 9–10 AM. By noon, clouds roll in from Bangladesh and visibility drops significantly.
The main viewpoint is good, but walk 200m to the left for a side-angle shot that shows the full height of the falls.
In monsoon, the mist is so thick you might not see the pool. Go in October for the best of both worlds — strong flow + clear views.
Don't eat at the tourist restaurants near the falls. Drive 2 km into Sohra town for authentic Khasi food at half the price.
