About Nongjrong Sunrise
Nongjrong is a small village perched on the edge of the Meghalaya plateau, approximately 30 km from Shillong. The village sits at an elevation where, on clear mornings, you can watch the sun rise above a vast sea of clouds that fills the valley below — with the plains of Bangladesh stretching to the horizon beyond. It is widely considered the most spectacular sunrise viewpoint in all of Meghalaya.
The experience is unlike anything else in Northeast India. You stand on the edge of the plateau, looking down at a white ocean of clouds, and watch as the first rays of sunlight turn the clouds gold, then orange, then pink. On the clearest days (October–February), you can see the Sylhet plains of Bangladesh stretching for hundreds of kilometres below.
Nongjrong is still relatively unknown to mainstream tourists, which means you can often have the viewpoint almost entirely to yourself — a rare luxury in Meghalaya's increasingly popular tourism circuit. The village itself is charming, with traditional Khasi homes and friendly locals who are happy to share tea and conversation.

Bah Markos Says
"Nongjrong is the most special place I take guests. I've been going there for 15 years and it still gives me goosebumps every time. The sea of clouds below you, the sun coming up over Bangladesh — there's nothing like it in Meghalaya. I always recommend staying overnight in the village so you're relaxed and not rushing. I know a family there who makes amazing Khasi breakfast. If you want the real Meghalaya experience, this is it."
