Standing on Top of Shillong

At 1,965 metres above sea level, Shillong Peak is the highest point in the entire Khasi Hills — and the view from the top is nothing short of breathtaking. On a clear day, you can see the entire city of Shillong spread out below you like a map, the plains of Bangladesh shimmering in the distance, and the Brahmaputra valley stretching to the horizon.

The peak is managed by the Indian Air Force, which maintains a radar station here. Visitors are allowed access to the viewpoint area, but photography of the radar equipment is strictly prohibited. What you can photograph — and should — is the sweeping 360-degree panorama that makes this one of the most dramatic viewpoints in Northeast India.

Why Visit Shillong Peak

Things to Do at Shillong Peak

    01

    Watch the Sunrise

The #1 reason to visit. Arrive by 5:30 AM (5 AM in summer). The sky turns orange, pink, and gold over the Khasi Hills — one of the most beautiful sunrises in India.

    02

    Panoramic Photography

The viewpoint has multiple angles. Shoot the city below, the distant plains, the pine-covered hills, and the dramatic cloud formations that roll in from Bangladesh.

    03

    Spot Bangladesh on Clear Days

On exceptionally clear days (October–November), you can see the plains of Bangladesh and even the Sylhet region. Locals call this the "Bangladesh view".

    04

    Pine Forest Walk

The road leading up to the peak passes through a beautiful pine forest. Ask Markos to stop for a short walk among the tall Khasi pines.

    05

    Visit the Small Temple

There's a small Hindu temple near the peak that locals visit for blessings before important journeys. Worth a quick stop.

How to Reach Shillong Peak

By Taxi (Only Practical Option)

Shillong Peak is 10 km from Police Bazar. The road is steep and winding — a private taxi is the only practical way to reach it. No public transport goes to the peak. Bah Markos offers sunrise trips with pickup from Wiba Homestay.

Important: Air Force Checkpoint

The peak is managed by the Indian Air Force. You must show valid ID at the checkpoint. Photography of radar/military equipment is strictly prohibited. The viewpoint area is open to civilians.

Bah Markos' Insider Tips

From someone who's driven this road hundreds of times

  • For sunrise, leave Wiba Homestay by 5:00 AM. I'll have the car ready and hot tea in a flask for the drive up.
  • Carry your Aadhaar card or passport — the Air Force checkpoint requires ID. No ID = no entry.
  • The best photography spot is slightly to the left of the main viewpoint, where you can frame the city with pine trees in the foreground.
  • Combine Shillong Peak with Elephant Falls on the way back — they're on the same route and it makes for a perfect half-day.
  • In November and December, the air is so clear you can sometimes see the Brahmaputra river glinting in the distance.
