The Most Magical Campsite in Northeast India
Shnongpdeng is a small village on the banks of the Umngot River, just 5 kilometres upstream from Dawki. While Dawki gets all the fame for its crystal-clear water, Shnongpdeng is where the real magic happens — this is where you camp beside that impossibly clear river, wake up to mist rising off the water, and spend your days swimming, kayaking, and cliff jumping.
The Umngot River here is so transparent that boats appear to float in mid-air — you can see every pebble on the riverbed 8–10 metres below. At night, the sky above Shnongpdeng is one of the darkest in Meghalaya — perfect for stargazing and campfire stories.
This is the kind of place that makes people extend their trip by a day. Or two. Plan for at least one overnight stay — a day trip doesn't do it justice.

Bah Markos' Insider Tips
I've taken many guests here — here's what makes the difference
- Book your camping spot before you book your taxi — good spots fill up fast, especially on weekends.
- Combine Shnongpdeng with Dawki (5 min away) and Mawlynnong village (30 min) for a perfect 2-day Dawki trip.
- Bring warm clothes for the night — even in October, riverside nights can drop to 12–15°C.
- The cliff jumping spot is safe but check water depth before jumping. The locals know the safe spots.
- I can arrange the full Dawki + Shnongpdeng overnight trip — taxi, camping booking, and Mawlynnong on the way back.
