Meghalaya's Inland Sea
Umiam Lake — also called Barapani (meaning "big water" in Khasi) — is a massive man-made reservoir created in 1965 by damming the Umiam River. Stretching over 220 square kilometres, it's one of the largest reservoirs in Northeast India and the most scenic drive from Shillong.
The lake sits at an altitude of 1,000 metres, surrounded by pine-covered hills that turn golden in autumn and misty green in monsoon. The National Highway 6 runs along the lake's edge, making it visible from the road — and the view as you drive past is one of the most beautiful in Meghalaya.
The Meghalaya Tourism Water Sports Complex on the lake's shore offers boating, kayaking, water scooters, and pedal boats. It's a great half-day stop, especially if you're traveling from Guwahati to Shillong — the lake is right on the route.

Bah Markos' Insider Tips
The lake is on the way — here's how to make the most of it
- Umiam Lake is on the Guwahati–Shillong highway. If you're arriving from Guwahati, I'll stop here on the way — no extra cost.
- The best viewpoint is from the dam wall, not the water sports complex. Ask me to stop there first.
- Sunset at Umiam is one of the most beautiful in Meghalaya. Plan to be here between 4–5 PM in winter.
- The water sports complex can get crowded on weekends. Weekday mornings are peaceful and the water is calmer.
- Combine with a drive to Nongpoh market (20 min further) for fresh local produce and snacks.
